The Literacy Support thread is making interesting reading, a good mix of pracrtical ideas and philosophy... By way of illustrating the contrasting provision for children with SEN.... A popular local comprehensive has a "special needs unit" a parent (and colleague) has been told that this is the only SEN provision available to her daughter who is in the process of being statemented for Irlens syndrome and related dyslexia issues. . No in class support is available. The unit has a mixture of children with SLD, MLD, Autism, Dyslexia..not sure what the common denominator is! .The children do integrate for "some subjects" In a neighbouring authority thre is no special units anywhere in the county, special school places are only available for SLD and MLD + additional needs. All other SEN get TA support in mainstream, possibly with some reduction in timetable, and if you are v lucky, some specialist teacher time... My colleauge feels that the SEN unit is not appropriate for her daughter, whose self esteem is a;ready rock bottom, but who is socially on a level with her peers. I have my own ideas about this situation, but would be interested to hear what the forum thinks.... Kate |
