Hi Rik,
I agree that the laptop option is a heavy one. The child I supported moved up to secondary, where I heard she was being given a laptop to work on. She used a wheelchair so I guess it was stowed somewhere on that and so not so weighty for her.
The Alphasmart is a great little tool; I guess it's down to my own personal taste as much as anything...I like to see a big screen when I'm working!
