Article: [senco-forum] Not SEN - dress code

Minutes before responding to this my son (15 years old) was deciding on
what to wear tomorrow to school as it is muffty day for children in
need. He cannot decide between the white or mustard Timberland t shirt.
Trust me, it is about labels! As parents we do everything in our power
to discourage it - my husband refuses to wear any advestisment across
his chest and we banned our daughter from the FCUK label as we both felt
it was inappropriate. I, for one, am glad of the school uniform
although I agree with Richard even that has a hierarchy.

P.S I never forgave my Mum for buying me Wranglers when all I ever
wanted was Levis. Call me shallow!

When I was at school I was bullied because of the school uniform - white
shirt, black trousers, black shoes and school tie. The only thing I
wore in common was the school tie all of which came from the same
source. My mother wouldn't buy me the Ben Sherman shirts, brougue shoes
and the trousers with the pleat down the seam (anyone remember the
name?) that the others had so I had the standard white shirt, trousers
and shoes - and was outcast accordingly. Uniforms aren't uniform.

That's the usual objection but the children at this school are so
unconcerned about designer labels you would be very surprised. The focus
is just not on what people are wearing, it's entirely incidental to the
teaching and learning within the school. Really!

It can be tough on those youngsters whose urge for self-expression must
be stifled according to their parents' income! Few teenagers would want
to be publicly identifiable as unable to afford the local ideas of
styles! Jill On 16 Nov 2006, at 07:48, Mary Kelly wrote:
