|
Sadly you are not alone. All 3 of mine currently in school get comments like that even though the teachers should know they have HMS & dyslexia that cause poor presentation/spelling. This years parent meeting (Y11) had 2 particular teachers going on about math layout/carelessness and physics likewise with the child present. My 20 year old was incredulous when the teachers admitted they did not know their student has dyslexia/HMS/STAM. They see the bright child and just decide she is not making enough effort or is wilfully careless. Her notes are available to all staff and the SENco is fed up of sending round emails. I wish the school had IEP's that go with the child. My son is actually statemented for Aspergers and dyspraxia. He is yr 8. All staff have an I.E.P. and a pupil profile alerting them to his most significant difficulties. For example because of ***'s dyspraxia please be aware that his handwritng is likely to be the best he can produce. He is likely to need additional time to complete written tasks. Please look try to look past the presentation of his written work to the content. There is more but I think you will get the idea.So you can imagine how concerned we were when he received his latest progress report and there were 3 areas of concern all to do with presentation and all to do with presenting clear and understandable work. You can not imagine how bad this has made him feel. Occasionally he has the use of an alpha smart but in English the teacher does not like him to use it because and I quote ' I am wary that this would mean he takes even longer to get started on tasks and it would also make it difficult for me to keep track of his performance'. Therefore he has to continue to put up with comments on his work such as 'Very detailed responses to the questions and excellent use of vocabulary. This would be even better if you took more care with your handwriting!' I could weep. |
