Thanks Ally We may have to go to full Ed psych assessment but I want to be very sure first. The DST now has a very brief non-verbal reasoning section but, of course, the instructions are still in English. Maybe I should get one of my French teacher colleagues to give him instructions in French for a non-verbal reasoning test. I have a (very) dyspraxic Korean boy and a dyslexic Hong Kong chinese boy - first language Cantonese, and he found it impossible to learn Mandarin (and English for that matter) also a dyslexic French and a German boy. The only way for a diagnosis I found was for a full Ed Psych. The tests I have showed the same as yours - just showed up the verbal problems. It needs to be more subtle than that and look at the underlying problems. Mind you, there is a lot to be said for instinct and experience, if you think he has problems then he probably has. You just need the concrete evidence. I've done the Dyslexia Screening Test but all it shows, of course, is that there is a problem in English and I suspect that he has learning difficulties as well. We don't get many students who do not have English as a first language - this is only the fourth in eighteen years! I'd appreciate some advice from those who know much more about this than me.
