"Some SpLD students cannot map (or blend) even basic combinations (bl/blue/black) and need a lot of onset/rime work with word families to get both aspects to stick. This lack is often overlooked especially when they appear to be able to 'read' albeit at a low level. My only criticism of synthetic phonics is that it does not seem to always include this area." That's because a phonics program teaches phonics not phonological skills (back to the thread last week) so phonics is not all thats needed. Phonological skills do not naturally follow on from having good phonics skills and need to be taught. "The very title Specific Learning Difficulties always gives the impression that there is a finite list of problems, but every SpLD student has their own combination or strengths and weaknesses within that as they do as a student generally." Exactly and these may have different causes and need different approaches. MFL for those with APD is harder aurally/orally so the written form would be more straightforward to teach and learn through visual methods.
