Hi Amanda

Do you know:

When/how old they were when they first came to England?
How old they were/how long ago they first began to learn English (don't
assume because thewy were in England that they began to learn English at
the
same time)?
what is their mother tongue?
Can they read their mother tongue?
can they write their mother tongue?
Is english their second/third/fourth etc language?

What makes you think there is a learning difficulty? Are they fluent in
their mother tongue

On average it will take a newly arrived person 7 - 10 years to achieve
fluency in English. So a child arriving in England at Year 7 will be in
their twenties before full proficiency is reached. Equally their rate
of
progress from newly arrived will be rapid.

i'll send you my continuum for EAL assessment which will help you to
assess
their current level.

Richard

Hello everyone

Anyone got any experience of testing then working with someone with
some
sort of language difficulty whose first language is not English. I've
done
the Dyslexia Screening Test but all it shows, of course, is that there
is a
problem in English and I suspect that he has learning difficulties as
well.

We don't get many students who do not have English as a first language
-
this is only the fourth in eighteen years! I'd appreciate some advice
from
those who know much more about this than me.

  Amanda
