Article: [senco-forum] b d confusion

Get a shoe box and cut two slits in the top. Label one "b" and one "p".
Make up some cards with words containing either sound - start with the
sound in the first position, then have some cards with the sound in the
last position and, finally, any position within the word. Pretend that
you are a novice postman and your student is the Postmaster General. You
say the words (don't let her see the spelling) and she tells you which
slot to post them in. You can even use nonsense words to make quite sure
she is using sound to discriminate and is not visualising a learned
spelling. You will soon tell if she can actually discriminate the
sounds. I bet she can't, at least not confidently. In that case, play
the game often enough until she starts to hear the difference, supported
by looking at your face and/or at her own (with mirror, obviously), and
holding two fingers lightly on her throat. She should feel the vibration
on her throat with the "b" (voiced) but not with the "p" (unvoiced).
If it turns out she CAN hear the difference and she needs a reminder
which letter represents each sound I have another idea so get back to me
if you'd like to hear it.
Have fun,
Mary

Subject: [senco-forum] b d confusion

Hello, as a learning literacy support teacher I have got a new pupil
(aged 14) today who is confusing b and p in her spelling. Not sure yet
whether she can hear the difference but nothing noticeable in her
reading as yet. Can any helpful person give me some ideas and/or
addresses of free resources in form of worksheets or games which I can
use with her?

Thanks

Dolina
