Gifted is NAGTY recommended top 10% IQ by EP report or CAT tests. Talented is exceptional as identified by any teacher in school (regardless of IQ) or recognition externally for internal or external activities i.e. represents county for a sport depending on what your school picks as its criteria. My daughters school did not realise that identification of IQ could be by EP report and maintained it was CAT test only. So although MENSA members the school would not put them on the register - their dyslexia always lowers their CAT scores! NAGTY advised me to make an independent application to themselves, but I forced the school to do it instead - there are other children alongside mine or coming up through the school who deserve recognition, but don't have such pushy parents! Support? They are supposed to go on extra subject based trips to museums or theatre or get involved with other school in joint projects. Reality? Nothing has been offered to either of mine this year although I suspect that just because they are on the register that the school does not have to actually do anything with them. The school has ticked boxes for OFSTED in identifying children & keeping a G&T register. OR perhaps just the other children have done things! Do you put them on a register? I am confident that we look after all the artists, sportsmen and musicians brilliantly- all those depts are truly fantastic, it is the academic side where we don't necessarily pick up the top boys and deal with them properly - of course the obvious ones - but what about the less obvious ones - perhaps the very very bright dyslexic who cannot get it down on paper particularly well so the class teacher doesn't consider him to be gifted. What we do with them, therefore, depends on their talent or gift, and often involves finding outside experts to help them develop. Half term soon - hope you all enjoy it. Would you need high CAT scores across all 3 reasoning levels or would two be enough. And how high is high enough? 130+? Do you put them on a register? Our intake is 11, 13 and 16yrs with the main one being 13 yrs. Having identified them what do you do then? We are only 400 strong, non-selective, with plenty of dyslexics etc but with some bright boys at the top end of the scale. At the moment I think we just make them do more GCSEs! Any ideas welcome.
