I have tried to speak out for 10 years - I have 4 top 2% children with mild to severe (Statemented) dyslexia. They are so busy trying to keep up, mostly unsupported, that their IQ side never gets a look in other than to keep them afloat. Previously I wondered how children reached 11 are were functionally illiterate and then found out the hard way 3 years ago. One SpLD diploma & 2 statements later at least I can make sure that something is being done for my middle two. Eldest now at Hull University (well it was there, Sheffield or Bangor!) and youngest in Y6 (severe writing problems). I just have one more round of school changes to survive! I'm horrified by low CAT scoring hi-iq dyslexics missing out. My daughter did but got to Oxford ...teacher wonders how and why, but not this parent.. (oh dear criticising my own colleagues.)
