To me it sounds like at best she is under extreme stress and at worst at risk of possible mental illness, as she appears to be disassociating from herself and coming out with apparently random thoughts ... I would ask advice from local CAMHS or other mental health agencies ASAP. The pressures on the highly intelligent are huge and she may not be able to cope; she may have high expectations of herself as well as fears of failure, especially as she is due to start year 11 soon...or this could have been triggered by some event that her parents know nothing about. these usually have a trigger when they reach crisis point. Always assuming that she isn't the type to "put it on" for attention, this young girl certainly needs help.
