Article: [senco-forum] Re: The new term

Priorities - well, after reading Dr Alex Richardson's book 'THEY ARE WHAT YOU FEED THEM' - I intend to:

a) change my family's diet - we're fairly good because my husband is diabetic but I have been drinking a sugar free apple drink which contains sodium benzoate - a definite nasty - so I've chucked that out for a start - and the hard fats and margarines which I don't really need - but bearing in mind this book is primarily about children's nutrition. I am now feeling very guilty that my younger son in particular has a really bad diet - not enough fruit and veg.

and b) spread the word and encourage everyone I meet to read the book.

First of all - go to www.fabresearch.org and you will find links to Guardian articles etc which explain the whole thing better than I could do - and these will be photocopied to all staff. I will put information in the school's next newsletter and give information regarding links to parents.
I shall also replace the notice board outside my office with information for children and explain just why we are advocating stopping so many sugary or salty foods, fast foods and junk foods - it's their learning and behaviour which are important here.

It's not a 'you can never eat chocolate or chips again' it's a 'don't make these a regular, huge part of your diet ' and as Prof John Stein (Rick's brother) says - try Rick's recipes 2 or 3 times a week for the oily fish................

After that ...................well:-

I instituted a regular review meeting with my T.A.s as a way of team building and I shall continue with this every term . I will also use the parent consultation afternoons (when I'm not involved) for INSET with the TAs - haven't decided what on yet.

Then I'll get those access arrangements done - the hardest part is getting the syllabus numbers etc from staff.

Then - I'll meet with those half dozen or so pupils who need a good start to the year and a meeting with parents and a positive chart will starts things off on the right foot.

I get to know most of my Year 7s because I teach them English - but there are a few I will need to seek out and make sure they know where I am etc.

Then there are the new teachers - we've got about 12 I think - so I must get to know them too.

After that I'll have a coffee.........................Janice WraySecondary SENCO, Herts

What do people see as the priorities for the new term. I've started wrangling over my support timetable for 17 TAs and I need some inspirational diversion so that my brain is functioning before Friday. > > What are you looking forward to getting your teeth into this year? > Any tips for getting new year 7 settled as quickly as possible?> Any suggestions for things to do with TAs on INSET days? > In fact any pearls of wisdom that anyone wants to share would be very gratefully received. > > Briony > > Secondary Senco > >
