When I worked as a special needs support assistant we used to have a lunchtine homework club and the pupils at the dyslexic resource base used to bring a friend along who invariably usedto be impressed by the "cool" room, PCs and things that they saw these pupils got to use there while they had to stay in class... also they had the use of laptops in class which other kids didn't have so that was a plus for coolness! Pictures of famous and successful dyslexics helped too, peole like rock stars, actors and sports people they recognised...Richard Branson always impressed them because he was rich, Keanu Reeves and Tom Cruise, are coo, Jamie Oliver "that cook off the telly" was popular too!b Also the fact that we used to go places like Alton Towers for a trip each year with the pupils from the main SEN department... Help the other pupils see that everyone has compensatory gifts and that being perceived as being different isn't always a bad thing.
