Good point. Myself I'm not sure how course work assessment works.

Is all course work submitted to the exam boards for external
moderation, in which case it's likely to be scanned in the same way as
exam papers. If so then logically this continuing gel pen ban should
also apply to all course work as well ...in which case how can the JCQ
justify this inconsistency for as far as I'm aware gel pens are not
banned for course work)?

Alternatively is course work normally held by the school and an
external moderator comes round to check it, so as a rule it doesn't
get scanned like exam papers and so therefore gel pens would be OK?
