We have kept children back a year several times. Sometimes they were statemented with medical/ developmental issues, Sometimes they were born right at the end of August. In all cases it benefitted them. They all remained with their new year group until the age of 16. Don't just dismiss the possibility of doing it out of hand. Many LA are unwilling to think about it. My own son had SPLD problems through school, he finally repeated a year when he did his A levels. Looking back, I think he would have been better repeating it far earlier on, like Reception or Y1.
