We have a girl with narcolepsy and we were told by medical personnel not to wake her, but to leave her to wake up naturally. She takes a full and active part in school life except for swimming (health and safety). ----Original Message---- From: colstonLSU at lwight.eclipse.co.uk Date: 13-Sep-2006 18:08 To: <mikestroud01 at aol.com>, <senco-forum at lists.becta.org.uk> Subj: RE: [senco-forum] narcolepsy Hi Don't know the official answer to Mike's question but taught a boy with narcolepsy years ago and it was impossible to wake him - he had to be left to wake naturally. We were never given medical advice how whether to wake or not although we did ask. At the risk of being thought of as flippant and irrelevant: In the "Peanuts" cartoon strip one of the girl characters suffered from narcolepsy and when she was introduced there was uproar. People protested to the cartoonist that he was mocking the afflicted. However she remained for many years and was often drawn with her head down on the desk asleep. My pupil used to "nap" with head slightly forward - never down on desk - and rarely for more than a few minutes at a time. We have a male student with Narcolepsy. I have been asked to find out if we should wake him when he falls asleep in lessons or leave him to wake up naturally. I have visited several web sites on the condition and this question does not seem to have been answered, I may have just missed it. As this site is the font of all knowledge I thought someone will know, if not could direct me to someone who does. Thanks in atticipation. Mike Stroud SENCo. Birmingham Secondary School. |
