ATL recently pointed out to its members that ALL records held by the police which /could/ or might be /relevant/ must be recorded on enhanced disclosures. This means that if an allegation is made against a teacher and a police investigation follows , it will be recorded on your CRB form, even if you are found innocent! Potential employers will therefore see this information. In the current climate what Head Teacher is going to not be wary of taking on someone with anything recorded on their CRB form? In effect, if a parent/child/colleague has a grudge against you, they only have to construct a convincing enough allegation to result in the police being informed and you will be unemployable as a teacher. This also puts a huge burden on Heads/LEAs who in effect will be acting as judge and jury when deciding whether to involve the police. I would love someone to tell me that I'm wrong, because as a SENCo and Learning Support Teacher I do work with children alone...for assessment purposes, as a member of SMT I have v upset/angry children on timeout....my readers come in twos, but one goes to get the next, thus leaving me alone for 5 minutes with another child. I see parents alone...Unfortunately, my classroom is very isolated , unlike the head's office. Up until now I have thought about the risks and made judgements on the basis that only in the worst case scenario of being found guilty by the police would anything be recorded. Now I am wondering what to do. I know we must keep children safe, but this leaves those of us who work 1:1 with children with BESD and their parents in an unbelievably vulnerable situation. Not to mention those of who on occasions refuse to "toe the school/department line" How do others work? Have I been completely naive up to now? What about TAs that I line manage? I would love someone to tell me that I'm wrong, and that there are more safeguards built in.... Kate |
