Article: [senco-forum] Up-market dogs (was New SENco)/Behavioural

If the dog had eaten a Fairtrade egg it would have still have tummy pains
but also a warm glow that someone paid a fair price for a product that the
producer has probably never eaten!

For a truly warm glow this year please ask your school to consider
sponsoring a child in Zambia. £50 pays one year of educational fees, exams,
stationery and uniform. Money monitored by a local church - receipts
available & contact by post or email (as soon as the internet is working!)
Alternative gift catalogue can provide extras such as shoes £5, jumpers £10
or family chickens £30 as a source of income.

This school system has no behavioural problems or SENco's etc. The only
barrier to learning is being born poor or losing your parents and not being
able to continue paying school fees.

If you don't pass the end of year exam you stay in that grade until you do!

It is not unusual to have 10 year olds in Grade 2/3 for a variety of
reasons - it is the best they can do (GLD or other) or they can only afford
fees on alternate years or a parent has died from AIDS, then another, then
an aunt......

Many children up for grabs are single or double orphans. Others have parents
who are too poor to afford schooling. Some are as old as 20 and just need 1
or 2 years more schooling to get their precious school certificate and a
route out of poverty.

My local Primary asked the school council to choose 3 children to sponsor
for a year as part of their SEAL (Social Emotional & Literacy) Project.
Surprisingly they chose children who have never been to school as they
recognised that school and having school friends has real value. 1 is an
orphan and one is not. They also chose a child who had to leave school when
her Dad left home and never came back. Again they identified with her and
said she needs to be back with her friends. They also decided that they
should make a longer commitment than 1 year - 'out of the mouth of babes...'
Now they just have to figure out what they are going to do to raise the
necessary funds.

A recent report found improved life chances for those with a sense of social
responsibility bought about by being made to take part in community
activities or anything that benefited others. Anyone want a catalogue?

PS if I can get commitment for 30 under 5's the church start a preschool
year for those orphans aged 4/5. Also I have contact with another pre-school
"Young Kids" in the neighbouring township if anyone wants a school link up.
100 kids in 3 classrooms you cannot swing a cat in and only one toilet - it
started in the downstairs of a 3 bed house! Newest classroom (5m x 4m?)
holds 30 but has no proper roof. Video clips available.
