Hi, The purpose of a TA is to ensure that the child they support has access to the curriculum and understands the work, knows what they have to do and remind them if this is not done. If this pupil has had 30 hours a week and their courserwork is missing the TAs should have picked up on this a LONG time ago. When I was a special needs support assistant, every aspect of my work was recorded for each lesson in a book for each pupil and this was monitored regularly. The book stated the subject, topic for that lesson, what was discussed, any suppoort given and homework/assignments, when due in etc. The Dyslexia Resource Base Teacher would read this every week for each pupil. I and my co lleague would also regularly liaise with the class teacher to ensure the pupils were up to date, even at times supporting them at lunchtime if they needed to catch up on something. I suspect there has been a breakdown in communication between teacher, pupil and TA and if more than one TA works with this pupil, they may heve expected the oither/s to be on top of it and nobody has taken ultimate responsibility. The child, in my view, is not responsible, if they were able to remember such things, they would not need the support. Someone has to take ultimate responsibility to ensure this scenario doesn't arise. Apportioning blame will not help her now but it might help others in the future if this could be resolved. Sadly, she is the one who will pay for this. Best wishes, Aly Chair Auditory Processing Disorder in the UK/APDUK www.lacewingmultimedia.com/APD.htm www.apduk.org |
