Article: [senco-forum] Ghana books

I have just seen the messages about sending books to Ghana and wonder if I can get involved too! My daughter is currently in Ghana at a school near Sekondi. I am going out to see her in May but can't really take much, although I want to. The school is currently trying to build a library and so I will be taking some money to help with this. I am currently asking everyone I know for £1 and one pen. I have collected some books (they have none) but I obviously can't take many. I have some Ladybird traditional story books (partly because they are quite robust), a few books with African and or black themes, some revision and study guides for Key stage 1,2,3. The oldest children are 18, but the standard does not go beyond GCSE. My daughter is teaching French, but has no resources, her fellow volunteer teaches Science again with no resources. The school gets no government funding. Some lessons are chaotic because the children do not have a pen and my daughter wants to provide every
child with a pen before she leaves (250+ pupils). She thinks that around a third of the children do not attend school, presumably because their parents cannot afford the fees.
I'm not really sure how to move this forward, but would welcome ideas.
The school is called
Prophet Boateng Preparatory and Junior Secondary School
P.O. Box 685,
Sekondi
Ghana

It is about 25 minutes from the town of Sekondi and has over 250 pupils. It has a nursery department and a primary and junior secondary school.
