A cautionary tale. As an inner ring secondary we have well over a hundred pupils working below L3. Many are Level 1 and some on P scales even up to Year 11 so why consider holding them back at all? Have you considered what happens when they reach 'their' Year 10 (actually Year 11) and have their 16th birthday? They suddenly realise that they can leave school - and do! No GCSEs (or ASDAN or COE), no proper careers advice (mostly happens in year 11 along with support for college applications), possibly no work experience (some schools wait until year 11). You cannot stop a 16 year old from leaving school whatever their needs. The two pupils I have had that were held back both did this - with no warning - just announced out of the blue to all in May that as the other sixteen year olds were leaving - they would! their annual reviews went out of the window and they didn't return. I'm sure other SENCos have experience the same - and the opposite where it has worked well - but who has a crystal ball? Most children are aware that they the 'wrong age'. However personally I have seen tremendous progress in similar such pupils, so continuing with their peers has been the right solution Anne From: Sue Upton <sue_upton at hotmail.com> Subject: [senco-forum] KS2 to 3 transition (was help for Y6 child working below L3) I have been following this link with great interest. We also have a child in Year 6 who is working below L3. Our problem is not what to do at the moment, but about the future education. This pupil is a very immature and vulnerable child who has recently been taken into foster care. Since becoming a looked-after child there has been improvement in his self-esteem as well as some progress academically. The reason for my posting is that we are considering grade retention (ie repeating Year 6 with us rather than sending onto Secondary School) and I would welcome your opinions. Thanks in anticipation of some good advice. Sue ___________________________________________________________ Yahoo! Mail is the world's favourite email.
