Hello Linda,
RE: [senco-forum] Diagnostic reading analysis ages 7-16
	(Hodder)
I have now used this test with several dyslexic pupils -- age range 8 - 12
and find that it gives them a better chance of showing what they can do
than the Neale Analysis. There are more test stories and the difficulty
level goes up in smaller steps than in the Neale, in which there is a big
jump in difficulty after the third story. For pupils with reading
difficulty the Neale can be very disheartening. The ceiling is CA16 which
means it can be used to test for exam access arrangement recommendations.
A good feature of the DRA is that it includes has a story and and
information at each level and you give them alternately.
The drawback with this test is that it is at first tricky to administer.
The pupil progresses through the passages according to how many mistakes
s/he makes: you give either a passage from the next level above, or you
drop back a level. (It takes a bit of practice, but there is plenty of
guidance on the response sheet.) So the pupil can go to and fro until they
reach a ceiling, and then you score the last three passages attempted. But
it does offer the chance of a more in-depth look at their reading.
I'd be interested to hear what other people think.
