One stop centres are a lovely idea in theory- No more trekking from mental health (ASD) to EP to OT etc when they are at opposite ends of the county. They have such Child Assessment Centres in HK and once referred to one professional they can pass you to another easily. If there is a diagnosis ( predominately medical) they arrange support such as Physio etc. The problem is not that they don't have EP's, optometrists and audiologists, but that they do not have much experience with 'dyslexia' or SLD as they have now labelled it. So the EP report is test data functional with no recommendations for support and the other two will state that ears & eye ( from a physiological point of view) work perfectly! Dolfrogs desire to have causal determination cannot happen if the professional has not experienced APD or visual tracking, focussing or Irlen issues. While my high street optometrist is both interested in SEN and experienced so as to pick up hearing problems, & gives eye exercises, few can. Currently APD has to be referred by an audiologist to Great Ormond Street ( reminiscent of the old way of treating visual dyslexia via St Bart's in the 1970's) and then what?.........I am only interested in how to support APD. Again this seems to fall back to individual strategies for each person. So - knowing that the problems are ear and/or eye related only helps to narrow down the likely strategies needed to support learning. The key is how to help each individual in the way that best helps them and from an LEA point of view this has to be done as cheaply as possible so starting the process with L3,000 of medical specialists is not the way to go. One stop centres - great - but who would pay? Even with the clearest report of cause and recommendations, money, or lack of it, will still stop a child getting what they need.
