Article: [senco-forum] Handwriting

Hi,

My view, for what it's worth, is that word processing
is the way forward for those children who struggle so
terribly with writing.

How often do we write in the real world these days?
Even application forms and many other forms can be
completed online no or have the facility to complete
in Word.

Education in SEN is all about access to learning and
children who struggle to write are being deprived
access to an appropriate education in some instances,
wasting valuable time on it. There is no such thing as
handwriting without tears, despite the program name.

I would arrange for all such children to be taught to
type and ask that they be allowed to use this as his
preferred method of recording information - it has
worked wonders for my son who could not "write" 3
sentences unaided and he is a gifted visual spatial
learner who now enjoys creative writing using a word
processor. It helps him to arrange his thoughts, plan
work, delete and cut and paste pieces into order.
Children like these often have organisational problems
and the keyboard frees them from this and takes the
pressure off those that cannot spell well and get
caught up in the intricacies of the mechanics of
writing instead of just creating.

Why not allow this freedom to all children who
struggle?

Best wishes,
Aly
