Well I pronounce each of those words (hooray, hurrah, hurray) differently so I would use the appropriate spelling for each. What about the use of c/k is there a spelling reform preference or rules for usage? as for 'a' in A sentence the use of 'A' might make life simpler especially for my children with dyslexia who use apparently random capitalisation, but often to represent letter names i.e. bumbleBee. perhaps we could do away with uppercase letters for proper nouns and the start of sentences. then they could be utilized to represent the long vowel sounds instead of some messy diagraphs. hoorAy! I for wun wood prEfer this as is mAkes mor sens to mE than sum dIgraf UsAj or reprEsentAshuns and wood bE troolE fonetik and Abul to cOp with lOcul dIalekts. O the sumertIm! eneewun for an Is-creem? I hav a fU kwarms Abowt gOing as far as the 2 Ronnie's Germanic style though: F U N E M N X? Sharon PS that was very hard on my spellchecker, but it will learn. -----Original Message----- From: senco-forum-bounces at lists.becta.org.uk [mailto:senco-forum-bounces at lists.becta.org.uk]On Behalf Of Jean Hutchins Sent: 05 August 2007 23:02 To: senco-forum at lists.becta.org.uk Subject: [senco-forum] Re: Spelling reform On 05/08/2007 Sharon wrote: > PS Jean - > RE: Spelling reform - I might eventually get used to losing the > useless 'ph/f'< Hooray, hurrah, hurray. My dictionary even says it can be 'hurra' as well. I did not know that. Do u teach all those? Do u accept them all from pupils? >but I cannot 'see' the use of using 'u/you' unless you use U.< What rule says that single letters that are words should be capitalized. U do not capitalize 'a' in mid-sentence. Spellings are man-made, not God-given. 'ewe'. Do u say 'you', 'ewe' and 'yew' differently when talking? So why write them differently? Grandson, Dominic, has learned one way of writing all sounds thru Jolly Phonics at nursery school and home. (They did not teach him the vowel digrafs, but we did.) He can write any word he wants, and it is readable fonetically. Now all he has to do is learn all the alternative ways of writing those fonemes and when to use each one!
