I second that!

At the moment, written English can be read with ease by anyone in the English speaking world, no matter what their local accent. Which of the hundreds of different English accents will be used as the 'standard' by which to construct a 'new' spelling system? Canadians pronounce 'marry' as 'mairy', Americans pronounce 'caught' as 'cot', the Scots pronounce the 'h' in 'while' & 'what'....

What glorious confusion would arise if the English, Welsh, Scots, Irish, Australians, Canadians, Americans, South Africans. West Indians (to name but a few) all spelled English words the way they pronounce them?
