Article: [senco-forum] HLTA and cover supervisors - an update

WrayJanice Wray <jwwray14 at hotmail.com> wrote: I mentioned in a previous e-mail that our Head of Science is sending a cover supervisor on the HLTA training.
I have been in contact with the TA training adviser and HLTA organiser at the LEA and they say:-
1) Cover supervisors cannot qualify as HLTA because they are not involved in children's learning - a change to their job description would be required. They would not be able to fulfil the 29 criteria.
2) considerable input would be required from the SENCO
3) HLTA trainees should be working at least 50% of their time in the science/maths departments.

I knew about (1) but (3) is a new one on me! I thought the original purpose of HLTA was to recognise a TA's particular expertise in an area, any area, in which they could make a 'whole school' contribution. Why this emphasis on Maths & Science? (Says me, slightly miffed that Literacy doesn't seem to get a look in!)
