The question that was asked was not about children who cannot read or spell
but about adults - in a school context this is our 6th forms who are working
towards AL  and in universities towards a degree - most of these will know
if they have actual physical vision or hearing difficulties by this stage in
their lives.

The major purpose for a screening test is just that at this level ( to be
truthful at any level) ie to screen to see if there is a possibiltiy of
dyslexia. Those who are familiar with these computerised screening tests
will be aware that there are a number of sub tests which flag up possible
difficulties with eg short term auditory memory or short term visual memory
( amongst others ) which can then be further analysed if it is useful to the
individual to do so

To rule out visual difficulties I would suggest a regular eye test. To rule
out Irlen/scotopic sensitivity or visual processing or perceptual
difficulties I would suggest a visit to a behavioural optometrist. A normal
hearing test wouldn't go amiss either, before (but not instead of) APD
testing... as chilsren ca have APD and hearig loss( and visual problems and
visual processing problems).

All of the above really! Dyslexia screening programmes only tell you the
child cannot read or spell and you need to know why and to ascertain and
focus on the child's strengths to aid them.
