It should be remembered that there are differing levels/severity of
dyslexia. An individual's difficulties may present themselves at differing
times in their education. This will depend on that person's degree of
dyslexia and the level of work they are working at. Some pupils perform very
well in KS1+2 but they increased work and speed of work in KS3 upwards can
bring their difficulties to the foreground. Equally some can perform well
through out school and find the higher level of work at Uni highlights areas
of difficulty. So it isn't always black and white regarding identifying
pupils with dyslexia.

My daughter was identified as having dyslexia when she was 8 years old. She
was screened for dyslexia following my (as a parent) request after her older
brother was identified as having severe dyslexia.

Apart from requiring a short course of spelling and handwriting support in
Yr 5 she developed strategies that allowed her to go through most of her
education without needing support or her even being on the secondary school
SEN register. She started to experience some difficulty when she started her
'A' Levels but they were not significant.

Her dyslexia difficulties have recently been more of an issue for her since
she has been at University. The level and amount of reading and writing she
has to do is stretching her skills where they are her areas of weakness
through her dyslexia.

My daughter is lucky she has gone to a Uni that offers free screening for
all 1st years so many will be identified at this stage.

My daughter notified the Student Services as soon as she went there about
her dyslexia and she was fast forwarded in the screening procedure. She had
an initial brief screen and is having another one tomorrow. I assume the
outcome of the meeting tomorrow will determine whether she will be referred
to an Ed Psych for an updated assessment.
Cheers
