My experience is exactly as Amanda's. Sorry too, Alyson, but I don't think you are completely right. Yes, I can spot 'Dyslexic Tendencies' but, in my experience, many pupils have these but do not meet the criteria for any Access Arrangements or need any more than good advice about how to work out how they personally learn best. These pupils have learned to read and spell in spite of their difficulties. Many don't even need extra time at GCSE level. What happens to them is that they 'reach their peak' when their learning strategies become so time consuming that they can't manage any more. I've known it to happen in Year 9, in Year 11, in sixth form and at University. It is NOT that 'it should be spotted earlier', - it is, but it is not a barrier to achievement for some at that level. I believe that we should focus on achievement and not spend time telling kids we teach that they 'have a problem' but say 'well done, you have found your own way of achieving' when that is what they have done. Also, I have known a few pupils who have gone into college post 16 and been told they are dyslexic on the basis of 'the test' that is done there when I have an EP's advice which says that Moderate Learning Diffiuclties is their major problem because they have an IQ below 85. " I'm sorry but surely this should have been done many years ago....if a school hasn't spotted these indications by the 6th form I would wonder what they've been doing all these years... I have listed the indicators of APD - MANY times on this and other forums. Others have stated the indicators ov visual processing problems. Head and brick wall come to mind...
