Article: [SENco-forum] learning styles

It is likely that they just want multi-sensory teaching using every input
possible to maximise her learning. If a child is blind it is easy to
stipulate that there needs to be a high level of tactile input. Children
with dyslexia need this as well. They like to feel the numbers or letters
etc., and this is not normally available. It is not just about the feel but
the direction a letter takes.

Kinaesthetic movement memory dictates our ability to write letters - Which
way does 'j' go? Over learning of the movement of 'j' with the child's eyes
closed removes the faulty visual input (just because the eye are working
does not mean the necessary processing is taking place) and replaces it with
a more reliable movement memory.

We all use it to drive or to pick our noses. Close you eyes and give it a
try (not the driving!)

Very interesting response Phillip. This matter is interesting me at the
moment. You may have picked up on another thread my concern that, in a
recently issued child's statement (that I'm advising on for appeal
purposes), an LA EP noted that the child' 'learning style' was
preodominantly 'kineasthetic'. S/he is severley dyslexic and effectively
illiterate, inumerate and an?immature writer/speller, although very bright,
knowledgable and with good language and communication skills.

?

But?there was?no explanation in the statement, or in the EP report, as to
what the term meant, nor including any strategies to?utilise strengths or
overcome weaknesses that might arise fom this 'diagnosis'. So, to assist the
non-plussed parent (I was equally non-plussed) I looked up the meaning of
the term. And?a summary, lay-understandable, clarification of the meaning
and implications of this 'learning style' is being sought to be included
in?a beefed up (otherwise very thin) statement -- decisions ultimately for
the tribunal panel to consider.

?

But, my 'research' (admitedly confined to the internet)?found very little to
suggest what practical strategies?my be adopted specifically to harness the
strengths of a 'kinaesthetic' learning style in an older?child who seems to
have?a singularly tactile/hands on approach to learning and in severe
deficit in auditory and visual learning approaches.

?

When I encounter relatively new terminology for aspects of learning that
have been previously seen as natural (discovery learning -- learning through
play -- trial and error learning) for younger children?and then applied (by
including newish scientific sounding?'jargon') vaugly, rather
indiscriminately and without explanation or authoritiative reference?--?to
older children,?to whom?much of the learning tasks are presented in
more-or-less abstract forms -- I worry whether parents (and school staff)
are being led down a blind-ally and that there is a?bit of
fashion-Universtiy-led trendiness going on here, that will have little
application in the real secondary phase world?requiring fluent?reading,
writing, numeracy?skills -- and a strong emphasis on abstract learning.

?

Such?basic skills and ways of learning?which the child I am concerned with
has?yet aquire -- but must aquire?if to gain access to the curriculum
on?entering secondary school in Sept 08. You have?strengthened my
suspiscions. Thanks.???

Before spending your money on learning style inventories you might want to
look at the work of thise who have critiqued the idea of 'learning styles'.
There is really very little in the literature to show that they exist and
have a significant effect on learning outcomes.?
