Article: [SENco-forum] learning styles/research

Research, like statistics, is often not worth the paper it is written on and
can be use to prove any argument any way round. I went on a Hornsby
dyslexia Diploma course and I expect my module on learning styles has lots
of 'for' research. While a lot of new information comes as a result of
research who needed a study to know that Rich Tea biscuits last the longest
when dunked!

The usual example for learning styles is of people left to build flat packed
furniture - some read the instructions, some look at the pictures ( some do
both!) and some know what the end result should look like and go for it. I
have seen this with myself, and my 2 daughters. One painstakingly put all
the pieces in pots and laid them in order etc. She is the math 'inchworm'.
The other 'grasshopper' type looked at my finished cupboard and then built
her one. She said she just knew what went were. Similarly in math she gets
the answers, but neither her nor the teacher know how.

What ever words you use to describe it they both learn and operate very
differently and need different methods of teaching or input if they are both
to succeed.
