Article: [SENco-forum] learning styles

Philip -We share some same views but for teachers to change their teaching
style they need to know that there are other ways.

Schools who embark on looking at learning styles have to include teachers in
the identification process and then arrange teaching for them on how utilise
different modes to get the best from all students or the process is
pointless.

Our primary had some good results with RR but they had tried nothing else
and this was 15 years ago in the days of whole word reading. So for those
students completely adrift it was a lifeline - if not a perfect one. The
reality however is that just having 1/2 an hour of undivided attention would
be enough to make progress!

We got better results with ERIC - Everyone reads in Class - where parents
stayed behind 8.45 - 9.15 to support a group of 4+ readers using the same
book. They could also hose home books with their child, spend time 1:1 with
their or another child leaving the teacher free to observe & test. No
special materials needed just commonsense and monitoring to pick up those
who needed extra help.

Absolutely agree that Education should be more accountable and not allowed
to foist 'programmes' onto schools without independent research. Similarly
perhaps parents should have £3,000 of schooling vouchers and place their
child in the school of their choice. As you say the strong will succeed -
but not sure where that leaves the rest in the meantime.

Always unsure about the labelling debate being a parent in the past
desperately seeking a label in order to access appropriate support (Ho! Ho!
Ho!) At the end of the day there is little point labelling if that
'appropriate' support is not available and this has nothing to do with it
being a medical model or not.
