There is a scheme called Memorise in Minutes: the Times Tables, which
teaches all tables using this sort of word association - although a little
more 'pleasant'! The children first learn a word and an associated action to
represent each number:

Two - shoe - students point at their shoes.

Three - tree - students pretend to be a pine tree. Both arms straight,
pointing downwards, hands away from their bodies.

Four - door - students pretend to knock on a door.

Five - hive - students BUZZ

Six - chicks - students pretend they are chicks and flap their wings.

Seven - surfin' - students pretend to surf. They act like they are
balancing on a surf board

Eight - skate - students put both hands behind their back and pretend to
skate. (Sliding feet in a skating motion)

Nine - sign - students put both arms above their head, elbow out, pretending
they are a sign.

They are then presented with a multiplication fact e.g. 2 x 2 = 4 which is
expressed in terms of these words (Shoe x Shoe = Floor) along with a story
relating to the words, a picture and activities all to help consolidate this
fact in students' minds.
E.g.:
Story:
A young boy received a new pair of shoes for his birthday. They were
just the kind of shoes he had always wanted. When he put them on, he found
they were too big. Even though they did not fit, he decided to wear them to
school the next day. Sometimes, as he would walk along, he would step right
out of them. He would look down at his feet and be in his socks. The shoes
would be sitting on the floor. As you can imagine, this was very
embarrassing for the boy.
Picture:
Picture two shoes (2 x 2) stuck to the floor. (4)

Go to www.multiplication.com/memorize_in_minutes.htm for details. I would
be interested in hearing from anybody who has used this - I would like to
try it with KS2 children and it would be good to have some feedback to
present my headteacher and maths co-ordinator.

Thanks,

Liz
