The main thing Janice is that you and your family are all OK.

Scary experience though

Subject: Please read - it could save your life

It was one of those nights. Last night - 13th as it happens.3.30 a.m. I
couldn't sleep, husband snoring, thought I'd go downstairs and heat up my
wheat bags (you know those useful little things that keep your back warm).
Had a drink of milk, o.k. with brandy in, put the wheat bags in the
microwave and punched the timer 5 times for 5 minutes.
Then went to my computer to check e-mails - foolish woman. After a while ,
could have been 20-30 mins or more- I lost track really - I smelled smoke -
toast burning ? My sense of smell isn't good. Went to look in kitchen -
yellow smoke billowing through, whirling around the ceiling, opened utility
room door and couldn't see a thing for smoke - literally not even my hand in
front of my face - realised it was the microwave - it hadn't switched off -
faulty timer - opened door again, reached in and opened microwave door to
stop it working. Closed doors to the kitchen to keep the smoke from going
upstairs and all over. Then put a damp dishcloth over my nose and tried to go
and open the back door - thought if I opened it smoke would go - got half
way before I had to turn back for the acrid smoke - eyes, mouth, lungs and
me with asthma - are you mad woman? Silly me. Not thinking straight are
you.Tried to get round the back of the house and open the back door from the
outside - key wouldn't work.Sat and thought - then dialled 999.Firemen came
in about 3 minutes - breathing apparatus - blue flashing lights - bright
yellow helmeted men - they told me to wake husband and son in case it 'blew'
- where were the gas and electricity main switches ? Go in lounge and close
door - don't come out until they tell us.Anyway - they opened back door -
they used a fan to blow the smoke out of the house, chucked the microwave in
the garden etc. Lovely men firemen - great blokes.Did I have a smoke alarm ?
No, stupid, idiotic woman, and no excuses at all.Did I have an escape plan -
my son said yes, he was going to jump out of his window onto the top of the
bay window below and the lawn - ha ha.Well, they left about 4 a.m. and
promised me a smoke alarm. So here I am, suffering the after effects of smoke
inhalation (not good for an asthmatic - doctor says use inhaler a lot), feel
sick and smell won't leave my nose, feeling panicky because I could well
have gone back to bed and forgotten all about those wheat bags - my mind
wasn't tuned in at all - middle of the night.Utility room covered in a sort
of yellowy smelly goo, floor sticky and everything is yellow from the smoke
and smells like hell. Mind you - we will have a good chuck out tomorrow -
well overdue. Husbands new shirts all yellow as well ooer. The moral of this
story - shut doors at night, get yourself smoke alarms, have an escape plan
or better still - ring 01279 507070 and ask for Station Officer Martin
Graham who will come round to your house for nothing and do a fire safety
check and give advice re: an escape plan.If you see smoke - shut the doors -
get out with all your family and ring the fire service. Don't try and open
the doors. More people are killed by smoke than flames. Now we have 2 smoke
alarms fitted by a lovely fireman (took him 5 mins) and some very good
advice.Have a good week-end and go to Do It All or wherever and buy AND FIT
smoke alarms.Oh yes, and tell everyone you can think of how stupid I am -
you've probably got smoke alarms already ???????I'll write a bit in the
newsletter for school.See you MOnday - older and wiserJanicex Janice Wray
