Commiserations, Janice.  What an awful thing to happen.  I hope that you
are feeling rather better today.  No, you're not the only one without
smoke alarms, either; I keep forgetting to ask the fire brigade to come
around and offer advice, even though they will supply alarms free.  I now
intend to write a large note to do it after Christmas - and hope that
nothing disastrous happens meanwhile.

Incidentally, my father's alarm was never activated on the few occasions
he burned toast under the grill, but screeched merrily away whenever he
grilled bacon - he didn't even have to burn it!
