I can recall posting something about this fairly recently, so it may be worth looking in the archives. Every school has to have a Senco, but it is up to the Headteacher how this is done in an individual school. Most people who are now sencos have either applied for the post, under that or another title, from inside or outside the school, when there has been a vacancy. There are courses on the role of the senco (I did one about 6 years ago with Roehampton, which was funded by my LA), but they are usually undertaken by people who are already in post, or who have been newly appointed. Things seem to vary so much from LA to LA. If you wish to gain special needs qualifications before applying for senco/special needs teaching posts, there is a variety of courses available, from dyslexia qualifications to SEN Diplomas - I did a diploma with University of Wales 13 years ago. I'm afraid you may need to be prepared to fund yourself. I think that your best initial move would be to contact your LA SEN Advisory Service, to see what information they may have. Good luck; it is a hard road to follow, but very worthwhile. I hope that this is useful. Happy Christmas and enjoy the rest of the holiday.
