Yes Successmaker is overpriced.
For pupils with very weak literacy skills it's definitely not the best
option.
However, for those pupils who need that bit of an extra push it can work. 12
months to 2 years is the maximum time scale I recommend using it with a
pupil. 
It should be used with other resources and the inbuilt reporting system used
on a regular basis to identify areas of weakness.
The danger is that large-ish groups of pupils are sat down in a computer
room to 'just get on with it' - a waste of time! They need to be closely
supervised and given individual help as with any other scheme.
Successmaker is not a magic pill to cure all evils. I just wish it was.
