Of course, the blame for our atrocious literacy statistics is not the fault of individual teachers - it is a failing of the profession as a whole. The DfES fails to provide insight and leadership and  teacher training is dire. A rotten system can't be put right by the tail wagging the dog. Teachers putting pressure on the leadership for change can only be productive if they are speaking with one voice but they are not. The way we are moving at the moment means we are likely to end up with another dog's dinner for the next fifty years. 

They have, in my view, little chance of agreeing how to teach reading unless they first agree what reading is!
