Living in wales what's an AST? Surely the basic message about differentiation is the same to each department - just better received in smaller group customised a little to the subject eg geography teach the kids how to shade rather than expecting them to have been born knowing eg science show them how to learn indivdual dodgy words like photosynthesis eg pe how to give instructions and gradually extend the length of the sequence ( and they haven't deliberately forgotten their kit so how to organise a timetable to remember to get it ready the night before) eg most subjects -photocopied notes rather than massive copying , if copying from board is needed tricks like each line in a new colour to help kids keep their place etc. encourage use of pc or alpha smarts etc Get some secondary kids to list what is difficult about each subject and then look at how these difficulties can be minimised ( get department to do this as a workshop so they have ownership of the strategies to use ) Use the fact that you aren't secondary so that the subject staff 'teach you' how to differentiate for secondary -again giving ownership Look at practical suggestions that Janice had collated together (around 18 months ago I think ) I'll undoubtedly think other things once I 've mailed this barbara ht -----Original Message----- From: senco-forum-bounces at lists.becta.org.uk [mailto:senco-forum-bounces at lists.becta.org.uk] On Behalf Of Maggiechessher at aol.com Sent: 03 February 2007 21:31 To: senco-forum at lists.becta.org.uk Subject: [senco-forum] dyslexia friendly help please! As a support teacher, I have been asked to do some work in a high school with individual depts. looking at dyslexia friendly issues relating to each subject area. This is following up a whole school inset last term to raise awareness. The overwhelming feedback from that was that there was too much theory -what was wanted was practical strategies. We have just had the first session for the R.E. dept.It was well received, mainly beacause we had an excellent experienced AST giving e.g.s of differentiation she had brought with her. I also did a bit on pupils' views and multisensory learning. Problem is, there aren't enough ASTs!! I would really appreciate any ideas for how to organise the other sessions, bearing in mind that I am not an experienced secondary teacher and feel that credibility is crucial. Many thanks, optimistically, Maggie Chessher -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by SAQNET SpamAlizer www.saq.co.uk, and is believed to be clean. |
