Hi Maggie Unfortunately these types of reports include all of the nonsense that surrounds dyslexia, and are academics on an super ego trip and mot related to the real issues the dyslexics face everyday. Even the title Developmental Dyslexia is a fiction. There are too many so called researchers who never get close to a real dyslexic but get paid to these in accurate reports this is pure sitting at a desk research looking at the work of others, and not really understanding what is involved and then producing and more unreal set of results, This why we have to problems we have now. Too many paid to reprocess the subjective opinions of others, wand very little practical objectivity. The USA literacy and reading forums are full of the pompous university professors who are good with at manipulating data but have no idea what they are talking about in practical reality terms, and their opinion can be very sought after. If you want to talk about dyslexia the only experiences you can consider are those who have dyslexia as most who purport to be dyslexia experts have lost touch with dyslexia reality, and live in their own worlds of self indulgence, there are a few exceptions, but even they bend to the whims of politics. I have always agreed with dolfrog's proposition that 'dyslexia' is not a 'condition' in itself but is a symptom of various underlying difficulties. However, unlike dolfrog, I believe that in the majority of cases the underlying condition is incorrect initial teaching of reading and my experience of working with 'struggling' readers, whether or not they are labeled as 'dyslexic', has done nothing to change this opinion. I would refer you to this report from the National Research and Development Centre for adult literacy and numeracy; Developmental Dyslexia in Adults:a research review (May 2004) http://www.nrdc.org.uk/publications_details.asp?ID=11 This is the sort of evidence I rely on.
