As I do not rely on one study to inform my views about the most effective
method of teaching reading to children without profound learning
difficulties I am quite indifferent to unsubstantiated comments made about
it by a completely anonymous person on a message board.

I have always agreed with dolfrog's proposition that 'dyslexia' is not a
'condition' in itself but is a symptom of various underlying difficulties.
However, unlike dolfrog, I believe that in the majority of cases the
underlying condition is incorrect initial teaching of reading and my
experience of working with 'struggling' readers, whether or not they are
labeled as 'dyslexic', has done nothing to change this opinion.

I would refer you to this report from the National Research and Development
Centre for adult literacy and numeracy;

Developmental Dyslexia in Adults:a research review (May 2004)

http://www.nrdc.org.uk/publications_details.asp?ID=11

This is the sort of evidence I rely on.

I think I might be agreeing with you as the whole point of my original post
to start this thread, was a link to the DfES Standards Forum and to a recent
contribution to the Standards forum that begins to expose one of the more
recent reports written on this topic was to a large extent based on a
research program which did not use sound scientific research methods.
