Article: [senco-forum] Asperger's help

We have a girl in Year 7 (ASD) with similar difficulties.
She does go into lessons usually, but the very slightest problem in the
lesson leads
to her leaving and standing in a particular spot in the playground and using
her mobile
to phone Mum.It is then very difficult (and time consumimg) to talk her
through it
and get her back into the lesson. One of the most difficult things to assess
is how
high her anxiety levels are for any particular incident.
We have had a bit of success with this though, in the last 2 weeks. We have
been giving her a
3 choice scenario.Choice 1 is the safe option (e.g.come up to Learning
support and work on
something from her folder) Choice 2 is a middle option( e.g.go to the class
and wait outside
until you feel ready to go back in, with support.) Choice 3 is to go back in
immediately with
support to sort the problem. If she feels able to select Choice 3 she gets a
good comment
in her diary which feeds into the school reward system.
We feel that this works well (so far)because she has the choice. She has
selected all 3 options at different times, but is really pleased with
herself when she manages a choice 3.
Best wishes
Carol.
