I agree Mark about different ethos and practice. Our school (or rather our Headteacher who is totally supportive of special needs and children's problems) has not permanently excluded for 20 years I think. Although there have been times when maybe we should have done. It is a challenging area and school and we have a few pupils who are guests of Her Majesty at the moment who maybe would have been excluded ... though I doubt it! Still for a very few we are not the right place. However my experiences of working in a PRU tell me that many, many (probably most) PXs are very much avoidable. For example there are two very similar schools in our 'catchment'. One hasn't excluded a single child over the last four years and yet the other has excluded many many children. Is one school simply unlucky to have had lots and lots of unusual cases like the one you mention? Or is it simply that they each have a very different ethos in practice?
