I do of course have a vested interest but since you mention young people with very significant reading deficits, it might be worth looking at the new Electronic Libary which comes out at the end of next month. It has 300 titles, many geared to boys with poor motivation to read. The cost will be about 30p per title and that includes the right to provide pupils with library copies to install on their home computer if they wish. The point of the library is to generate a love of books and reading - the stress is taken right out of the reading process by offering auditory help in respect of any unfamiliar words. The idea is that pupils prepare at the computer but do the actual reading to a teacher or teaching assistant from a printout after they have completed the preparation with a much greater chance of success than would otherwise be the case. Nothing succeeds like success. The approach is not based on phonics and has the advantage of large scale, publshed research which can be seen on www.carronpractical,co.uk Hope this helps. Eddie C. |
