Hi Greg Not in Lancashire so feel free to just press 'delete' if you've not got time. I've been a SENCO since 1988 and I feel very strongly that there is not enough support for those new to the post in any LA. You need to know which (or whose!!) buttons to press to get advice and support. A few years ago, I had a boy who fell through a garden shed roof (in his own garden) on to some sheet glass and nearly severed his right arm. He had to learn to write with his left hand as all the nerves in his arm had to regenerate. We had a difficult time getting the LA to give him a Statement and some funding. A requirement for support from his consultant was what swung it - medics get results when educatioinalists don't. I'd also do a risk assessment and conclude that the girl is unsafe in school without full time adult support between and in lessons, then get senior management to say that she can't come to school if she's not safe. What about safety in such areas as the toilets - are your floors non-slip? Pupils who use crutches, both male and female, are particulary prone to slipping in areas where floors might be wet. Are the cubicles big enough for her to get a wheelchair in with her leg extended and then safely transfer? Finally, I'd say you need to consider whether she needs to restrict her timetable, at least initially. It is extremely tiring to do a full school day if you are not physically fit. She won't be able to do PE and you may need to decide on other lessons she will miss so she can keep up with English, maths, science, ICT and whatever else you and her parents agree she must not drop. Good luck. I think this is the most interesting job you can do. Don't let it take over your life because it will if you let it! I was wondering if anyone can offer any advice on the following: A year 7 student will be going into hospital this week to have her right leg extended. She will have an, 'external fixator' attached to her femur. She will be returning to school after Easter in a wheelchair or crutches - hospital will advise. The question is will the school be able to receive extra funding form the LEA (Lancashire) to support this student? I hope you don't mind me asking - I guess over the coming weeks/months... depending on how long I survive... I will be seeking your support. Please bear with me as some of the questions may sound very trivial/easy to you. Hope you understand. Take care, Greg Amanda Secondary SENCO Cornwall |
