Article: [SENco-forum] Re Reading research project

"There may be a genetic predisposition to dyslexia, but, until such time as
every single infant is screened at birth, who can tell how many children with
this predisposition will go on to become full blown 'dyslexics'? For all
we know, there could be millions of people 'out there' who were genetically
predisposed, but are fully literate and exibit none of the traits popularly
associated with dyslexia."

Dismiss the misnoma dyslexia and replace it wirth APD and you are right.
There are, 10% of the population who are thought to have APD but not everyone
with APD has reading and spelling difficulties. Add to that those with visual
processing difficulties and the number goes up. 60 of what is termed dyslexics
are thougtnht to have APD as the cause. Not lack of SP teaching. You cannot
cause neurological damage by not teaching a child with SP.

To use what Sharon said...and replace dyslexia with APD...

"APD is not created -it is already present at birth and likely before.
Acquired APD comes after a stroke or other head injury, possible at
birth but less likely than later head trauma."

Add in other causes like glue ear and epilepsy too.

Some people have both inherited and acquired forms of APD.

Please Maggie stop trying to make us believe people are made to have reading
issues because they are not taught using SP. APD is a neurological conditon
as is Irlen syndrom and visual processing deficits. There are the causes.
They affect much more than reading so PLEASE stop hawking your RRF endorsed
products and realise that these are real people suffering for their entire lives
not just in school.

Best wishes,
Aly
