Knowing where and why the ph/gr relationship changes is one of many layers to de-coding which do not come automatically to all. It is only in teaching children with SpLD have I learnt exactly when the hard 'c' changes to soft 's' as in ice/ace or why 'dge' sounds like it should just need a 'j' .
