I have just read your original posting, having replied to a reply. In Wales, we do not have to use NLS, so we act accordingly and provide text that children can access, but which will also help them to move forward. If you are required to use NLS, have you tried the DfES website? They have lots of publications - CDROMs, booklets, files full of lesson plans etc, all aimed at making NLS accessible for all children. They are free, although numbers supplied to one school/individual are sometimes limited, and are usually very good. Our LEA has often used them as the basis of INSET courses for Literacy as well as SENCOs and LSAs and I have been ordering these freebies for years. Our school has little money to spare, so if the governnment is offering something free, I take it! Hope this helps, Jean Dowding S Wales Have been concerned of late of the quantity of chn who will find great > difficulty in accessing the weekly texts used in the literacy hour, > especiaIlly noting a previous forum message that spoke of the KS2 SATS > having reading age of 15. > > Any tried and tested suggestions that I can share with colleagues as I try > to address this issue across the primary age range.
