Those children who did not respond to a short bust of dedicated decoding/blending exercises would by implication, have a specific learning disability and should attract earlier intervention than is currently the case. Leaving any class teacher to deal with such children is damaging, inefficient and very costly in the longer term. I think too much time is wasted with children with non-specific difficulties which could be resolved in infancy without requiring their intervention. If 3% of children were to be statemented, this would mean about 7,500 statements annually When I last saw a count of the number of Ed Psychs, it was about 600. If this is the case, this would mean each Ed Psych only preparing about 14 statements every year. What are the actual statistics Brendan? Eddie C. |
